Group Dynamics: Reflection

When our class was assigned the marketing research project, we were advised to get into groups of people with different backgrounds, in terms of education i.

Watching the majority of students around me form groups with others they did not know, I thought it would be much better if I were in a group with people whom I knew and trusted. This is exactly what happened. Kate StadumErin Kyllonenreflection paper on group dynamics, and myself Shelby Lentsch were students with retail merchandising backgrounds.

We had all been in prior groups together and were more than just friendly acquaintances. As friends, we knew the level of expertise each other had in certain areas and maintained a favorable level of trust with one another. There was just one problem.

When the project was assigned our group's initial reaction was to choose a topic related to the world of retail. Reflection paper on group dynamics wanted to research reflection paper on group dynamics appropriate retail channel and stores that would be best suited for Karyn's product.

Due to the fact that we reflection paper on group dynamics were in the retail merchandising program, reflection paper on group dynamics, it was extremely difficult for us to think outside of the box and our comfort zone. When we finally realized this was the negative of forming a group with friends, we scheduled to meet with the professor in hopes that he would force us to think differently than we had been. That is exactly what happened.

Having many idea generation meetings after meeting with the professor, we were able to think in different perspectives and select our final topic: Time--as it relates to the linen process.

While many might argue that working in a group with friends is not the best choice, I declare that it was the best decision for this project. As someone who fears group work because of group grading and personality conflicts, I knew I wanted to operate in a unit of comfort and trust. After weeks of working with Kate and Erin, I am able to identify two features that best describe our group dynamic: Leadership and Relatedness. Leadership occurred when we listened for that which others needed in order to move forward.

Each one of us, at some point, discovered our own capacity for leadership. This was never in speaking or giving orders to one another- rather, it was found in our ability to listen for what is needed in the moment, and to express ideas such that they occur as opportunity for others. In past group work of my own I have seen for the most part that one person acts as a leader for the entirety of the project. What was different and reflection paper on group dynamics compelling about our groups was that we were all leaders individually.

Erin was outstanding in keeping the group organized around a time-managed-schedule. She was also reminding us of important dates and providing us with somewhat of an agenda at the beginning of each meeting.

Kate was exceptional at preparing the actual presentation. Her outgoing personality allowed her to communicate her creativity to us. For example, she was the energy and brains behind the short skit that we put together for the presentation.

Lastly, I felt that my personal strength was in condensing our overwhelming amount of collected research. When it came time to narrow what we had obtained, I was able to cut out what I thought was irrelevant for Karyn. With each of us having separate leadership qualities we were able to push and support one another and shine in different areas. Relatedness occurred when we listened to the needs of one another.

I felt that our group operated at a level of identity where the distinction between the self and group was meaningless. Being friends who have worked in groups with one another before, we knew the personalities and academic behaviors we would be dealing with when we formed our group.

Throughout the duration of this project each of us has personal, or outside, issues that were somewhat pressing indirectly on the marketing research project. I was so distracted by what was going on outside of the group that I could not contribute fully as I normally would. Rather than coming down hard on me or judging me, Kate and Erin communicated to me that they were there for me and understood why I was behaving that way that day.

In groups where members are not familiar with one another, I would not have gotten the same level of empathy and support. Fortunately, as friends, we were there to focus one another and act as support systems when times got tough. Group dynamics can strongly influence how the team reacts, behaves or performs, and the effects are often very complex.

Our dynamic entailed that of a 'natural force. The effects of our 'natural force' at work should be considered positive in the following ways:. Constant communication which naturally results in other members being drawn into the discussion which results in a good 'social' feel to the group which makes people enjoy being in the group which improves motivation and commitment Friendship, therefore, is a team dynamic and is one that was functional and socially-exciting for us.

Keeping together is a progress. Working together is a success. Posted by SRLents 1 comment:. Subscribe to: Posts Atom. On Living Happily SRLents Hello.
